Karst Tourism

Karst wine region a home of famous Karst wine the Terano, who is in our opinion, the most famous red wine in Slovenia. The Karst winemakers, in addition to the top quality refosco wines, also provided many traditional tourist events. You can find most of them here on the Karst Wine Road.

Krast Wine Region
Karst is the smallest wine-growing region in Slovenia and measures only less than 600 hectares. The Karst lies between the Vipava Valley, the Brkin Hills and the Gulf of Trieste. Despite the seemingly large area, the area suitable for wine production is much smaller. In this area we find typical karst terrain dominated by limestone, river banks, bays and sinkholes and red karst soil also known as Terra Rossa. Most vineyards are found in sinkholes and bays, as it is also where most of the land is suitable for successful vine growth. The climate in the Karst is Mediterranean, characterized mainly by low rainfall and a strong bora wind.

Karst wines
Terano is the dominant Karst wine. Teran is presented as a Slovenian specialty among wines that is produced from the Refosco wine variety, but because of the harsh conditions and red soil, it has a distinct, unique taste. In addition to Teran, they produce in this area a Slovenian autochthonous white variety called Vitovska Grganja, which was more successfully popularized in Italy.
