As you stroll through the old town, your guide will take you past the San Rocco School and Church, home to the lesser-known "Tintoretto Sistine Chapel" frescoes, an awe-inspiring masterpiece preserved inside. Just around the corner, you will see the Frari Chapel, a popular spot for both weddings and gondola disembarkations, with its understated but beautiful exterior.
Next, the tour brings you to Campo San Polo, Venice’s largest square and a historic site where Venetians once held bullfights during the famous Carneval celebrations. The square is surrounded by stunning architecture and filled with the lively energy of locals and tourists alike.
Venice’s Markets and Bridges
From Campo San Polo, the tour continues to the Rialto Market, where you will experience Venice's bustling marketplace filled with fresh fish, produce, and Venetian delicacies. This is a perfect spot to grab a snack, explore traditional Italian foods, and pick up unique souvenirs. Nearby, you'll marvel at the famous Rialto Bridge, the oldest bridge across Venice's Grand Canal, offering panoramic views of the canal and the vibrant life on both sides of the water.
After a refreshing break and an opportunity to enjoy the local atmosphere, you will cross the Rialto Bridge, entering another section of the island where traders and merchants once thrived. Your guide will share fascinating stories about the lives of Venetian traders who conducted business here and their crucial role in the city's development as a maritime power.
San Marco Square and Iconic Venice Landmarks
The tour's next highlight is Piazza San Marco (St. Mark's Square)—the only square in Venice officially referred to as a "piazza." This iconic square is home to some of Venice's most recognizable landmarks, including the Basilica di San Marco, with its stunning mosaics, the Campanile (Bell Tower), and the ornate Clock Tower. The square, bustling with life and history, offers an excellent opportunity for photos and soaking in the grandeur of Venice's architectural and cultural heritage.
The tour continues with a visit to the magnificent Doge’s Palace, which served as both the White House and Pentagon of Venice for over a thousand years. This historic palace is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture and was the seat of the Venetian government, as well as the residence of the Doge, the elected leader of the Republic of Venice.
